New retaining wall construction

Get usable flat ground out of a sloped lot, hold up a driveway cut, or add a wall before the bank starts to slump.

A retaining wall lets the ground on one side sit higher than the other without the high side sliding down. In Morgantown that usually means cutting a level pad into a hillside for a yard, a patio or off-street parking and putting a wall in front of the cut, or building up a low side with fill and holding it in place.

How is a wall built to last on a slope?

  1. Dig to firm ground. The base course sits in a trench on compacted crushed stone, deep enough for the wall's height.
  2. Plan for water first. A perforated pipe at the base, wrapped or set in clean stone, carries water out to daylight or a storm line.
  3. Backfill with stone, not clay. Clean gravel directly behind the wall lets water drop to the pipe instead of building pressure.
  4. Reinforce taller walls. Geogrid layers tie a block wall into the soil behind it; poured walls get steel.
  5. Compact in lifts. Backfill goes in a few inches at a time and is compacted, so it doesn't settle and pull the wall later.
  6. Handle the surface. Grade the top so rain runs away from the wall, not over it.

One tall wall or terraces?

Two or three shorter walls stepped up a hillside spread the load out, give you level planting beds and are often easier to design and permit than one big wall. On a narrow city lot there may not be room to step back, which is when a single engineered wall makes more sense.

Getting equipment in

Plenty of Morgantown lots sit on narrow streets with steep driveways, alleys or steps as the only access. Ask how the contractor plans to get block, stone and a machine to the spot, where they'll stage material, and how they'll protect the driveway, sidewalk and neighbor's yard.

What affects the price?

  • How tall and how long the wall is
  • Wall material and finish
  • Digging, hauling off soil and site access
  • Drainage, geogrid and any engineering or permit work
  • Tearing out an old wall first

The contractor sets the price after seeing the slope, the soil, how equipment can reach the spot and what the wall has to hold back. We don't quote prices, and any figure you hear over the phone before someone has walked the site is a rough guess at best.

Common questions

How tall can I build a wall without an engineer?

It depends on the wall type, what sits above it and the rules for your address. Taller walls and walls holding up a driveway or building commonly need an engineered design. Ask your contractor or the local permit office.

Can walls be built in the winter here?

Often, yes, but frozen or soaked ground can hold up digging and compaction. Spring is busy because that's when many walls show damage.
